Kitty Genovese

It all began in the USA The word ‘Neighbourhood ‘ comes from an old English word from 1100/1500 period of the English language, from the word ‘ neahgebur ’. meaning ‘ “a person living near another”, i.e. a neighbour. Note American English language drops the ‘u’ in its spelling. In 1964, 28-year-old Kitty Genovese was stabbed in New York outside her apartment. Two weeks after her murder it was rumored that 38 witnesses saw or heard the attack, but none of them called the police or came to her aid. This motivated a community response and the very first Neighbourhood Watch scheme was set up in New York. This neighbourly approach grew and thrived across the USA and in1982 the first UK scheme was set up in Mollington, Cheshire.

We grow from strength to strength as more volunteers across England and Wales form local, county, and regional groups. from 1992 Neighbourhood Watch continues to grow as it builds vital bridges between residents — particularly those who may feel isolated or vulnerable — and the wider community. By fostering connection, trust, and collective responsibility, these schemes play a crucial role in strengthening neighbourhood bonds.
Recent research highlights a powerful opportunity: over 80% of households across England and Wales say they would join a Neighbourhood Watch scheme if one existed locally. This appetite for participation has inspired the creation of new schemes nationwide, helping more people feel safe, supported, and involved.
With every new member and every new group, Neighbourhood Watch becomes more than just crime prevention — it becomes community empowerment.
